How it works

What the numbers mean.

The profile numbers are the ones Instagram shows on the account page. For the recent posts (up to 12), we read the likes and comments on each and work out an engagement rate:

  • Engagement rate = average (likes + comments) per post ÷ followers.

Some accounts hide their like counts. Those posts show “Hidden” and are left out of the rate. Private accounts show their profile only: their posts are not public, so neither are the likes.

What is a good Instagram engagement rate?

There is no official benchmark, but around 1% to 3% is common, and larger accounts usually sit lower. Very large brands can be well under 1% and still reach millions. Compare accounts of a similar size, and look at several posts rather than one.

Questions, answered

Can I see stats for a private Instagram account?

Only the public profile: name, bio, followers and following. Posts on private accounts are not public, so their likes and comments are not shown.

How is the engagement rate calculated?

Average (likes + comments) across up to 12 recent posts, divided by followers. Posts with hidden like counts are left out.

Do I need to log in to Instagram?

No. Enter a username and the stats load from public data. Nothing is posted and the account is not notified.

Why does a post say “Hidden”?

The account has turned off like counts for that post, so Instagram does not show them publicly.

Is it free?

Yes. You can run 10 new lookups a day without an account, and profiles looked up in the last few hours open instantly. For bulk lookups, the Instagram API returns the same data as JSON; new accounts get 100 free credits.

Can I export this data?

Yes, through the API. /user/by_username returns the profile and /medias/by_user_id the posts, as JSON you can load into a spreadsheet, a database or your own app.
